Medics spent about seven minutes stabilizing the victim, who was bleeding profusely. The ambulance crew took the victim to Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown, where he underwent about 51/2 hours of surgery.

In gratitude, the victim’s father reached inside his jacket pocket and retrieved a tiny plastic envelope containing a specially minted coin. Placing it in the palm of his hand, he shook hands with Foraker in a ritual of respect familiar to people who served in the military. He repeated the gesture with Shade.The honoraria he gave was a so-called challenge coin containing the Marine Corps logo and an inscription that read, in part: “Row Well and Live.”
